I have known Johnny since grade school.  We had run in some of the same musician circles for some of our adult years, and he knew me as an audio engineer.  But he really didn’t know about my work in Advanced Manual Therapy.

Johnny got a fairly serious dog bite on his right hand.  In the initial evaluation at the Emergency Room, Johnny told the doctor, “Before you do anything, you need to know, I’m a piano player.”  The doctor replied, “Wait here, let me make a phone call.”  He called the hand specialist. You don’t know many piano players named Lefty.

With the best hand surgeon available in Houston, Johnny felt things were under control.  I didn’t learn about the accident until several months later.  When I called Johnny to offer my services, he said, “I had the best surgeon and the best PTs I could find, what do you think you could do?”  I know you can’t help somebody who doesn’t want help.

A few months later, he called me and said, “I’ve developed trigger finger and the doctors wants to do surgery again.  Do you think you can help?”

Let’s get to work.  I checked with Johnny about the work the physical therapists had him doing.  I know some great PTs, and I don’t want to disrespect anybody’s attempts.  But there were some serious things missing from his rehabilitation.  Extension, not just flexion, the fingers move both directions. In one session, we relieved his trigger finger.  I advised him on the normal motions of a hand from the body mechanics perspective, and provided him with a few mobility exercises.  One more session and he was back to being the baddest Hammond B-3 player I’ve seen in a long time.

In his doctors’ defense, when I needed a good orthopedic surgeon, there was no substitute.  But surgery may not be the only answer.  However, the man who’s good with a hammer, sees the world as a nail.  Looking at the interactive systems, might reveal other possibilities.
